5 Things You Need to Know about Current Website Design

Hang on tight, website design is primed to go in some exciting new directions. I recently attended American University’s Social Learning Summit (SLS), a conference open to the public that features panels of the top marketing leaders in the Washington, D.C. area. I gathered some ideas from the session on user interface and user experience that will help you in venue marketing.

Here’s a list of things you should consider when marketing your venue online in the next year:

Flat Design

I believe Apple’s iOS7 update started the flat trend. Flat shapes and colors are in, while drop shadows and gradients are out.  A panelist at SLS had a great quote, he said "design something that’s simple because it’s simple, not because it’s cool." In other words, if it’s going to be a simple design, it better work. Flat will be in style until Apple switches back to dimensional designs.

Responsive is not the answer

Surprisingly, responsive website design is not the key to website design. If users can’t operate your website and proceed through your funnels (such as a booking engine), then responsive is not the solution. Think about social integration, scrolling websites and form fields. An app or a mobile website are also possible considerations. Another great quote from a panelist, “Don’t jump on the trend bandwagon, but don’t ignore it either.”
